The SS Division Hitlerjugend or 12th SS Panzer Division "Hitlerjugend" was a German armoured division of the Waffen-SS. Most of this division’s men were members of the Hitler Youth, while the senior NCO’s and offers were from other Waffen-SS divisions.

It first saw action on 7 June 1944, at the Allied Normandy landings on D-Day, as part of the German defensive operations at Caen.  Along with the Battle of the Falaise Gap/Pocket where they suffered a large number of casualties.   

In December 1944, the 12th Division was sent to fight the Americans at the Ardennes offensive, or Battle of the Bulge.

After this battle the division were sent to Hungary to fight around Budapest.  After retreating to Austria, they then surrendered on May 8, 1945, near the town of Enns, to the U.S. 65th Infantry Division.

The 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend became infamous due to several war crimes they committed during the early Normandy battles, including the Ascq and Normandy Abby Ardenne Massacre. massacres, including several other massacres, arsons and rapes in the cities of Plomion, Tavaux, Bouillon, Godinne, Hun, Rivere, Warnant and Namur. 

After the war several members of the division, including its commander Kurt Meyer, were convicted of war crimes.
