The SS-Deutschland regiment first saw combat during the Invasion of France. Afterwards additional SS units were raised to form the SS-Das Reich division, with Deutschland at its core. The division was twice pulled from the Eastern front to France in order to recover, during the second refitting the Allies invaded Normandy. Das Reich took part in German counter offensives but was decimated by Allied air superiority.
