WW2 SA SPORTS BADGE IN BRONZE – ORIGINAL

This is an original German SA Sports Badge ( SA-Sportabzeichen). The Bronze SA Sport/Defence Badge was awarded to those who had successfully passed an educational and physical programme. Maker marked with “Berge & Nolte A.G. of Ludenscheid, Germany and numbered 844029.   With a Roman broad sword, superimposed over the Nazi Swastika and encircled by a wreath and oak leaves.

Instituted in November 1933 by Erenst Rohm it was only issued in bronze up to 1935.  After February 1935 Hitler decreed that the badge was officially recognized and was then issued in 3 grades, Silver, Bronze and Gold.

No longer awarded only to SA members, but to youth of all German military and paramilitary organizations.

In 1936 a points system was established for receiving the badge. In 1937 each recipient had to pass an annual proficiency test to retain the badge.  The physical fitness programme was divided into 3 sections; gymnastics, defensive sports and agricultural service.

This badge was to be worn on the left breast, under the Iron Cross.
