The Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend) or HJ was a youth organization within the German Nazi party, Originally called Hitler-Jugend, Bund Deutscher Arbeiterjugend, (Hitler Youth League of German Worker Youth). From 1936 to 1945 it was partially made a paramilitary organization with young boys between the ages of 14 and 18 years. An even younger group of boys aged 10 to 14 years was called the DJV.

As the Hitler Youth were viewed as the soldiers of the future it’s members were indoctrinated into the Nazi ideology of the time, including myths of an Arian super race.  Initially the group was similar to that of the Boy Scouts, with hiking, camping, and youth friendships.

Overtime though the group’s activities involved military training, weapons usage, assault course circuits and fighting tactics.  Wanting to turn the Hitler Youth into motivated soldiers the Nazi’s placed high value on physical and military training compared to just academic training.

In early 1943, Artur Axmann, leader of the Hitlerjugend, proposed that the youths be formed into a Waffen SS division, to aid in replacing lost soldiers.

In 1944, over 20,000 youths were formed into the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend, which was deployed for the Battle of Normandy fighting again the Canadians and British.  The Hitlerjugend lost 3,000 lives by the end of the Normandy assault.
