The StG 44 was an improvement of an earlier design, the Maschinenkarabiner (42)H.  It is also known by it's earlier designations of the MP43 and MP44.

The StG 44 was the first successful assault rifle featuring an intermediate carridge, automatic fire, and a more compact design. The StG44 was design specifically for hitting close targets of fewer than 100 metres.  The other rifles of the time were designed for long range in excess of 1000 metres. 

An effective and successful rifle the  StG's influence can still be seen in modern assault rifles today.
