Gauleiter was the party leader rank of the regional branches of the Nazi Party. Gauleiter was a senior Nazi Party rank, subordinate only to the higher rank Reichsleiter and to the position of Führer. During World War II, the rank of Gauleiter was obtained only by direct appointment from Adolf Hitler.

The NSDAP was by nature a paramilitary organisation. The original purpose of these ranks was to provide leadership and organisation during election. After 1933, these ranks became a political chain of command, harmonising Nazi party leadership with local, regional and national government.
