BRITISH WWII WOOL CAP COMFORTER WW2 DATED - ORIGINAL

Wartime British commandos used the wool winter scarf commando cap in place of noisy helmets. . The British knit cap was commonly associated with Commandos, but actually issued to all British soldiers.

These are genuine unisssued and well marked with various manufacterers and ink stampings. We only have dated 1944 and 1945

This is, in fact, a scarf made from a 'tube' of knitted wool, sewn at both ends.

By pushing one end through the tube to the other end a long cap is made. Rolling up the open end produces a "cap" or to explain it another way you put your fist in one end, make a sock puppet, and roll it up

The first of these multipurpose items appears to have been issued in 1900, although it may go much further back. The idea was to provide some warmth under the steel helmet of 1916 or perhaps even earlier.
