This is a standard pair of brand new Brogans.  These are correct for the North or the South.  This pattern is often called the Jefferson Bootee.  The US army issued this pattern from 1851 until the early 1870s.  The Confederacy issued tons of these as well.  These shoes are all leather, with the rough out, which was most common for period brogans.  The soles are pegged and the leather is dyed black.  Most troops, including many officers, could only expect to be issued Brogans.  More expensive boots often had to be obtained by other channels.
