Operation Sicily / Assault on Italy

The first step in rooting German forces out of mainland Europe was the invasion of Italy.  Rough terrain, hideous weather and the necessity of initial coastal assaults made the campaign hard going for the Allies.  The entire heroic effort is documented here with nerve-wracking scenes of intensive combat.  Massive bombardment of, and subsequent infantry action on the islands of Pantelleria and Sicily begin the saga.  Patton’s US 7^th and Montgomery’s British 8^th armies are followed as they pursue different routes through Sicily.  Fierce naval and air attacks, beach landings, infantry action, mine clearing and the monumental reconstruction of facilities sabotaged by retreating Germans.

Normandy Landings

To guard against attack from across the English Channel, Germany prepared a wall of guns and fortifications along occupied France’s northern coast.  In the summer of 1944, the Allies struck these defenses in force.  The amphibious assault at Normandy was to become on of the most famous operations of the war. How the Allies prepared for and carried out the invasion is revealed in spectacular footage of conflict on an epic scale.  Included are memorable film sequences of Britain teaming with troops and military vehicles; Allied soldiers training for D-Day; massive airborne and naval bombardments aimed at reducing the Germans’ ability of defend France; intense combat on the French beaches and further inland as the Allies pour ashore.
