ABOUT ROMMEL

After the Great War ended, the highly-decorated Captain Rommel remained on active duty. Helping to re-build the devastated Imperial Army into the new Reichswehr, Rommel became both a ski instructor and an instructor at the infantry school in Dresden. He also became an ardent student of mathematics, which contributed to his later fame as a master strategist. Promoted to major in 1932 and then lieutenant-colonel a year later, Rommel returned to his beloved Gebirgsjager -- taking command of the 3rd Jager Battalion at Goslar in the Harz Mountains. Adolf Hitler had come to power by this time, and Rommel became an ardent supporter of the Fuhrer because of his support of the Army over the SA. Hitler also became fond of Rommel, and in 1934 promoted him to major-general of his Special Guard. Less than two years later, Hitler would re-militarize the Rhineland and set the stage for what would grow int! o the Second World War -- with Rommel at his side.

In September of 1939, Rommel participated in the invasion of Poland as part of Hitler's special field headquarters. Although he did not personally play a decisive role in the Blitzkrieg conquest of Poland, Rommel did have an excellent opportunity to observe the effectiveness of armored columns in combat. Fascinated at the speed and certainty with which these steel-clad monstrosities overtook and decimated the enemy, Rommel quickly became an enthusiastic student of armored warfare. When the Fuhrer asked Rommel at the conclusion of the Polish campaign what he would like to do next, the newly-promoted general gave him his answer with a single word: PANZER!
