The Royal Corps of Signals Museum is located in Blandford Camp in the
beautiful Dorset countryside and only a stone's throw from the scenic and
interesting Georgian Town of Blandford Forum. It is the national museum of Army
communications and the exhibits and displays show the part that communications
have played in the many wars and campaigns of the last 150 years. The Museum
collection is regarded as being of National importance and the excellent
Archives are recognised by the Public Record Office
The Museum was founded in Catterick, in North Yorkshire in the mid 1930s. It
was moved to Blandford Camp in 1967. In 1989 an appeal was launched to raise
over £1 million to construct a new wing and to totally refurbish the displays.
Following a successful appeal, the new wing was constructed in 1995 and the
refurbishment was completed in 1997. The Museum in its new form was re-opened on
28th May 1997. There are many interactive displays and fun trails for
younger visitors.

About the Museum
In the Summer of 1963,
a small public enclosure was opened at Yeovilton to allow the public to stop and
watch the Fleet Air Arm at work. To increase interest, the Commanding Officer at
the time proposed that the 3 historic aircraft held by the Station should be
placed on view by the Enclosure. Putting the aircraft in the open caused them to
deteriorate and so it was decided to place them under cover.
From this small
beginning the Museum opened in May 1964 with 8 aircraft and has continued to
expand ever since. Today the Museum covers 6.5 acres, has more than 40 aircraft
on display with as many again in storage or refurbishment. It is now one of the
largest aviation museums in the World
Exhibition
Halls
At the
beginning of the 20th Century, the Royal Navy was the most technically
advanced service on earth. It adopted aircraft to enhance the roles
and capabilities of its ships and people so that from 1914, the Royal
Naval Air Service (RNAS) and its successor, the Fleet Air Arm, have
taken part in campaigns all over the World and created many of
military aviation's most innovative ideas. The Fleet Air Arm Museum
tells their story.
The major
exhibits are organised on two floors.

Exhibits range from the magnificent Avro Vulcan
bomber through more than 30 other historic aircraft, both civil (like the Argosy
above) and military, aero engines and other artifacts, to a wide range of
memorabilia. We're particularly proud of our collection of material relating to
Sir Frank Whittle, the Coventry-born engineer who designed the jet engine which
made modern high-speed aircraft and economical air travel possible. The Museum
houses a heritage centre dedicated to the memory of Sir Frank and his marvellous
inventive genius. |
