War Museum Exhibitions
The Canadian War Museum tells the story of how conflict has defined our country, from earliest times to the present day. War has shaped our borders, decided our languages, chosen our ethnic heritage and affected countless other aspects of our lives. This is our story.
Three levels of permanent exhibitions take you through Canada's war-related history from the earliest days of New France, through the First and Second World Wars, to modern peacekeeping missions. Our exhibitions showcase a wealth of authentic artifacts, including works by renowned artists, as well as personal stories and memorabilia of those who have experienced war.
Canada was a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The new NATO Gallery commemorates Canada's role in this collective effort, from the return of Canadian troops to Germany in 1951 to the participation of Canadian forces in NATO missions in the Balkans nearly fifty years later.
The exhibition showcases the valour and heroism of more than forty individuals throughout Canada's military history.
Families! Visit the Discovery Room and try on a Viking warrior’s garb or the uniform of a modern air force pilot. Play ‘I spy’ ... through a trench periscope. Discover activities for all ages.

When the Canada Aviation Museum (CAvM) first opened at Uplands airport in Ottawa, it was one of three major collections owned by the Canadian government.
At that time, CAvM’s focus was on bush flying and early aircraft manufacturers in Canada. A second collection, held by the Canadian War Museum, concentrated on military aircraft from World War I to the 1950's, while the Royal Canadian Air Force collection emphasized military aircraft related to RCAF history.
It has since grown to include more than 120 aircraft and countless artifacts such as engines, propellers, instruments, armament, flying gear and wind tunnel models. In 2000, the National Aviation Museum was officially renamed the Canada Aviation Museum and remains a component Museum of the Canada Science and Technology Corporation.
