COMMONWEALTH
AIR TRAINING PLAN MUSEUM
Brandon, Manitoba, Canada
The CATP Museum is a non-profit,
charitable organization founded and operated by volunteers. The Museum is
dedicated to the preservation of the history of the British Commonwealth
Air Training Plan and serves as a unique memorial to those airmen who trained
and served, and especially those who died, while serving their country in the
air war of 1939-1945. This is the only Museum in the world dedicated solely to
this goal and we think it is fitting that it is located in Manitoba where so
much of the training was carried out. At the time the Plan was signed in
December 1939, Canada had only 4,000 people in the Royal Canadian Air
Force but enrollment reached 250,000 by the end of 1943.
Aircrew personnel from
Australia, New Zealand, England and Canada were all trained under The
Plan. Canada was chosen as the training country because of its
preferable climate and the fact it was far from the dangers of enemy
activity. The Plan was referred to by Winston Churchill as Canada’s
greatest contribution to the allied victory and referred to by President
Roosevelt as the “aerodrome of democracy.”
Summer Hours:
10 am to 4 pm, seven days a week.
Admission: $5.00 Adults, $3.00 Youth,
$2.00 per student for school groups
Under six years old - free.

The
stone walls and buildings of Lower Fort Garry are ancient reminders of the time
when the Hudson's Bay Company governed half of present-day Canada. Begun in
1831, this fort is an oasis of gracious living on the edge of the Prairies and
to gather food and ship it along the waterways of the northwest. Red River carts
brought produce to the fort from farms in the area; Schooners and York boats
carried provisions down Lake Winnipeg and throughout the interior. A historic
treaty between the British crown and First Nations peoples was also signed here. |

Interpretive
Animation Program:
Lower Fort Garry is staffed from May until September each year with costumed
interpreters. They each assume the role of someone who lived in the Red River
Settlement in the 1850s and are able to discuss any aspect of Red River history
in character with visitors. This means that as a tourist, you are able to speak
with someone "living" in the mid-19th century!

Period Demonstrations:
Historically accurate activities take place on
a given day (weather permitting). Gardening, ground maintenance, wool spinning
and dyeing, blacksmithing, upper class leisure activities, business meetings
as well as traditional Aboriginal crafts and activities keep the fort busy
with something different to do almost every day of the season.
|
|
Restored/Refurbished Buildings and Landscape:
Tour the fort's original buildings and grounds
as you stroll through the past. From the Governor's Residence to the Guest
Cottage, from the Blacksmith Shop to the Bakehouse, all buildings have been
restored through years of constant historical and archaeological research.
This ensures that the site appears and functions as it would have in the
1850s.
